Second Soprano Rehearsal Note
Soprano 2 Notes
3/31/2026
Warmups:
Jane had us sing major and minor triads, focusing on tuning. Then she had us sing “first one” and “first one leaf” – minor third; minor third, major second.
The minor third is the base of this section of Alder and of Grown Wild.
General Notes:
When we like things we slow down.
Concord Fragments
I went over my old copy of this and entered all the breaths, etc. from before. I think, after today's rehearsal, it would benefit if I gave them all here:
In Some Dry Dry Earth
m. 1 no vibrato
m. 5 Cross off the tied note, make it a quarter rest.
m. 7 Change the first beat to an eighth note, eighth rest.
m. 10 Change “up” to an eighth note, eighth rest.
m. 11 Change the first beat to an eighth note, eighth rest.
m. 17 Cross off the dot from “root” and make it a quarter note, quarter rest. (to match altos)
m. 19 Change “root” to an eighth note, eighth rest.
m. 37 No breath
m. 38 Breath after “cov-er-er”.
m. 47 Change “ease” to a quarter note followed by a quarter, not an eighth, rest. Put “z” of “ease” on third beat.
m. 48 Carry “ied” to m. 49, put a vocalized “D” on downbeat.
m. 49 Same for “dead”.
m. 52 Breath after “light”, put the “T” there
This Day I am 18
m. 5 No vibrato.
m. 8 “here” – sing “ee”, go right to it.
m. 14 Breath after “me”
m. 19 Sing softer here, was forte, now mezzo piano
m. 21 Crescendo
m. 22 Take the dot off the tied note, change to an eighth rest. Sing a good “v” on the rest. Also, “thee” earth.
m. 23 Take the dot off the tied note, change to an eighth rest. Sing a good “th” on the rest.
m. 25 Change the tied eighth note at the end of “one” to and eighth rest. Take a good breath there.
m. 29 Note the sforzando, < to forte. Follow Jane on the decrescendo, crescendo so we all do it together.
m. 30 Carry “self” to the downbeat of m. 31
m. 31 Take the dot off “self”, change to a quarter rest. Note the crescendo on “self”
Walden
m. 4 Rest at end.
m. 7 Rest at end.
m. 9 Rest at end.
m. 22 Rest at end.
m. 28 Carry “sky” (skah) to downbeat of m. 29. And turn early!
m. 38 Note accent on “ech”
m. 40 Carry “loon” to downbeat of m. 41, with a good vocalized “N”
m. 46 Change tied note to an eighth note, eighth rest, with a good vocalized “N”
m. 49 No breath
m. 51 Change tied note to a quarter rest.
m. 54 Change “keep” to “keeps”
m. 57 Turn early.
m. 61 Carry “gaze” to downbeat of m. 62
m. 77 Remember, close to the “N” immediately.
m. 79 Change tied note to a quarter rest, put a vocalized “N” there.
m. 80 Remember, close to the “N” immediately.
m. 82 Subito piano.
m. 87 Turn early.
m. 89 Breath at the end of the measure, put the “s” there.
m. 90 I think these are the wrong notes – it's the same as the other instances.
m. 95 Change the tied note to an eighth rest, with a good vocalized “N”.
m. 96 Carry “loon” to the second beat, crescendo to forte.
m. 99 Change tied note to an eighth note, eighth rest.
m. 102 Change tied note to a quarter rest.
m. 105 Change “keep” to “keeps”
m. 108 Breath
m. 110 Breath
Hope is the thing
This needs to be intense.
m. 3 etc. All instances of “feathers” – it's short, the “S” is super short.
m. 12 Get quickly through the “sw” and right to the “ee”
m. 52 The first time piano, the second time stay mezzo forte.
m. 54 Make the second time here mezzo piano. Do not slow down either time.
Also, take off the “D” of “and” so you sing “annever”.
m. 63 Make sure you mark this – Change the tied note to a dotted quarter rest. Cut off with Jane.
m. 65 Don't change to “all” here, it's still “at”
Note: Jane said all our pickups were flat, and they must be in time.
I Started Out Singing
m. 10 Make “sing-ing” lead into “Oh yes” that follows. Turn early.
m. 16 Watch Jane for the cutoff.
m. 18 Watch for the ritard. Do note breath.
m. 41 “smah-ling”
m. 45-46 “the moon's” are repeated Cs.
m. 51 ITB
m. 68 Put the “s” right on beat 4.
In this piece every page turn is vulnerable. Turn early!! so you know what is coming.
Cutoffs need to be exact and correct (or it's not clear).
Shadow River
Be more confident. Our line is extra important as we sing or move alone often.
The dotted eighth, sixteenth figure where it occurs needs to be done carefully, both notes need to be strong. Bring it out when it occurs.
m. 5 Quick “str” – get right to “ee”
m. 8 Be strong.
m. 9 Lift “skies”, sing “skah”. Carry “skahs” to the second beat.
m. 11 Lift “lies”, sing “lah”
m. 13 – 14 We went over this as it's hard (esp. with the page turn in the middle), maybe look at it again.
m. 16 Higher C
m. 18 Carry “wings' to beat 2.
m. 19 Lift “sad”
m. 22 (and elsewhere). Pronounce “power” as “pah” then flip the ending “R” as part of the next word – here “pah rov” (power of).
m. 29 Create energy
m. 31 Change “blade” and the following eight rest to a quarter note, quarter rest. Take a big breath.
m. 33 Bring out the B natural and following A.
m. 36 This is the third time I have this marked – Change “lone” and the following
eight rest to a quarter note, quarter rest.
m. 45 ITB even if mezzo piano. Crescendo on “'twixt”
m. 47 No breath
Where the Light
Make the long notes bloom.
m. 3 “haps” leads into “it”. “not” should bloom. “be” is an eighth (not a sixteenth).
m. 20 Do not slow down in this section, drive it forward. The first sopranos have to fit into what the rest of us are doing and if we slow down they can't.
m. 27 Again, don't slow here.
m. 38 Watch for cutoff.
Emily talked about the upcoming election, and mentioned that if you want to run for a position, contact her.
** “Next week will be an important rehearsal” (we had 3 absences today, try to stay healthy). I think Jane has started running pieces to refresh our memories and sing as many pieces each week as possible.
