Second Soprano Rehearsal Notes

2/26/2025
Soprano 2 Notes
Hi All – I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather!
Warmups
Jane had us do an intonation exercise for Grown Wild. We sang on a neutral sound in wandering keys so we could concentrate on the intervals.
To Sit and Dream
This piece is wistful and wanting – so it needs more technical accuracy. It needs to be rhythmic and perfectly together. Vowels need to be pure and maintained through the entire long notes (don't close to the consonants early).
It also has “spasms of uncertainty” so maybe practice it some more.
Grown Wild
m. 5  Put an “h” in front of the “oo”
m. 5 – 8  This piece is full of crescendo, decrescendo hairpins. Mark them and do them.
In general – we are “luxuriating and behind”.
m. 10  Flip the “R” and get quickly to the vowel – “ih”
m. 13  “now go”
m. 17 – 21  Pass the phrase on to the next section, pick it up when it's our turn, i.e. a conversation.
m. 20  This phase is hard because it's on the break in our voices. Careful of the pitch – B flat especially.
m. 25  Hairpins again.
m. 27  Don't punch/hit “me”. Keep it light so it doesn't flat.
m. 50  Hairpin again.
m. 60 – 61  “her willingness”  is the climax of the piece. It's her willingness to live in a difficult & complex world and be herself.
m. 74 – 75  Support the B flat – but sing through it as “the” is the lead in to “girl” which is where the emphasis goes.
m. 88  “Big”
m. 89 – 95  All the “up”s are quarter note, quarter rest with a good “P”. Watch Jane for the breaths/lifts.
In Some Dry, Dry Earth
This piece needs energy. I also have a request from Jane to “work on this”.
m. 2  Flip the “R” in “dry” so the sound goes up, not down.
m. 7  Cross off the tied note of “put” and *put* the “T” there.
m. 9  Put an “H” in front of “which”
m. 10  “up” is an eighth note followed by an eighth rest. It is short.
m. 11  The tied note of “hand” is an eighth note followed by an eighth rest.
m. 19  Lift after “root”. Watch Jane for it.
m. 36  Note the “poco accel.”
m. 40  Lift after “days”. Watch Jane for it.
m. 52  Lift at the end. Watch Jane for it. Put the “T” with her.
This Day I am Eighteen
Be more ferocious with moving forward.
m. 20  Put an “H” on “when” and lift/lighten the note as it is unison.
m. 23  Lift after “earth”
Sky Song
m. 22 “Clahds”
m. 25  We are under the altos
m. 67 – 69  Elaine, Susan, Marcie, Michele will sing with the altos. Rest of us stay on S2.
Come, Spring
This one is also a “work on this” piece.
m. 11  Note this is altos.
m. 16  “sign” is short
m. 17  “storm” is short. Note the crescendo.
m. 18  In case you missed it, the G is natural here (carried over from previous measure).
m. 25  “ah”
I hope all you who were out sick feel better soon.
Have a good week. Linde
