Second Soprano Rehearsal Notes

Soprano 2 Notes
1/20/26
Jane Fisher reminded us that masks are strongly recommended at the moment. Susan Avery offered to hold masks – if you want to bring in a few of your favorite masks she will store them for you in case you forget to bring one with you some day.
Birds of Passage
Make sure voiced consonants are on the same pitch as the vowel that follows.
e.g. m. 3 – The “L” of “black”. And the “B” should be before the beat.
m. 3  Start in head voice, keep it light. Keep this passage smooth and moving forward.
m. 83  This is the start of the 7/8 section. The notes set a pattern of a dotted quarter and two quarters. This can be thought of as one two three one two one two, or one and a two three.
Note: if you have not sung this piece before, everyone picks a phrase that is meaningful to them, that they want to share with the audience. It's babel, but sounds cool. And truthfully, even though I doubt anyone could hear my phrase but me, it still feels significant.
The Treehouse, Landfall
m. 37  Elide the “s” of “notice” to “above” to keep the phrase smooth and flowing.
m. 39  Note that the hold is on the first beat, then the piano plays notes as we hold the note longer. Be prepared for Jane's direction here.
m. 44 Crescendo
m. 45  Keep the E flat high, sing “rah”
m. 46  keep the G in head voice, keep it light
m. 59  As the notes get lower, we tend to get softer – no diminuendo here
m. 60  Put some “air” in the pronunciation of “earth” to keep it high
m. 74 Start crescendo, Also, use the eighth notes to work into the crescendo
m. 78-79  Elide for a smooth line – put the “K” of “walk” on the beginning of “and”, and the “s” of “notice” on the next “notice”
m. 83-85  It seems challenging to go back into 2 beats for the measure in 85 after the 3 beats of m. 83 & 84. Think – one and a two and a.
m. 86  Sing “feh” and keep the “eh” going til the end of m. 88
Shadow River
m. 14 & 15  Put a good “k” on the cut off of “music”
m. 21  No “R”
m. 22  “Power” should sound like 1 syllable, so no “oo” and no “r”, more like “paher”
m. 24  Keep the G high
m. 33  Put the “m” of “mine' on the D,  Note the B is natural, keep it high.
m. 34 & 36  Put a shadow vowel on “lone”
m. 47 – 48  She changed the time signatures here in order to de-emphasize “air” so the whole phrase would float.
Jane will be back next week, hopefully nice and relaxed.
Enjoy your week (cold though it will be).
