Second Soprano Rehearsal Notes

Soprano 2 Notes
2/10/26
Warmups
Jane had us hum in a whiney way and sing “guh guh” with a hard “g”on a scale in order to get us to sing very forward, in the mask. Why do you want to sing in the mask? Getting the air to spin against a hard surface is the best way to get resonance. What is the mask? The front of your face, behind your teeth, your nose, your sinuses.
Then Jane had us sing on “fee”, then, as we got higher “fah”, using the “f” to get the air moving. So pushing lots of air through the “f”.
Alway Something Sings
Note: it is “alway” with no “s”
If you don't know what notes to sing, you can check out previous notes that I have published on our website. If you don't find it there, please ask me.
m. 39  No breath.  The decrescendos are meant to accent the first syllable and taper off on the second.
m. 42-43  No breath.
m. 54  In the body
m. 57  Breath at “flow'rs” – you can skip the word to take a good breath.  Also, get back up the the D for “in” with energy.
m. 58  Make “rose” a quarter note, quarter rest. Blend with the first sopranos for “robin's mellow tone”
m. 61  Breath at “show'rs”. Again, you can skip the word. Again get back up the the D.
m. 62  Good “k” on cutoff (on m. 63)
m. 65  Make “things” a half note, quarter rest. Put the “s” right on beat 3.
Be careful with the “s” cutoffs. They all need to be exact and short.
m. 69  S2 can have a little broader “e” to get the C# to come out.
m. 70  “aw”
m. 71  Dotted half note, quarter rest.
m. 74  Dotted half note, quarter rest.
m. 76  Half note tied to a quarter note, quarter rest.
m. 77  Higher G
m. 78  Higher E
m. 77-78  More second soprano
m. 82  “freely” means you have to watch as Jane conducts each note.
m. 86  “oldɘ” – good “D”
m. 89  Unison C# (softer)
Birds of Passage
m. 66  “Freely” again – learn this passage so you can watch Jane as she will be playing.
m. 67  No breath
m. 75 – 83  This gets gradually louder with m. 79 conversational and m.81  full voice.
m. 101  Place “T” on the tied note, breath
m. 108  “rawm”
m. 112 – end. We are whispering because we are the birds.
Hope is the Thing
Soprano 2 sings the top line with the firsts. Ignore what is written (unless you are Elaine or Sara).
pg 5 & 6 – Notice the second verse – different words and different dynamics
m. 44  Change to dotted quarter note, dotted quarter rest.
m. 45  (and elsewhere) sing “teeoon”
m. 49  Turn page now!
m. 52 & 54  Change tied note to a rest.
m. 57 – 58  Sing “at all” elided together with a glottal before “all” (aɘ – t'all)
m. 63   Change tied note to a rest.
m. 66 – 67   Sing “at all” elided together with a glottal before “all” (aɘ – t'all)
Note – the glottal should be super quick.
I Started Out Singing

m. 51 – 61  Tutti
m. 59  Slower – watch.
m. 60  Higher C
m. 61  Watch for cutoff
m. 66 – 74  Cut off clean – the “s” needs to be exact and short.
Also – energy!
m. 80  Faster
This piece takes a lot of energy, but it's short.
Shadow River
m. 33  B natural
m. 36  “lone” is a quarter note, quarter rest
Where the Light Begins
