Soprano 2 Notes
Evening Ladies,
We had sectional today with Jane at the piano.
To Sit and Dream
“To sit and dream, to sit and read, to sit and learn about the world.” – This is not 3 phrases, but one thought. Try to shape it that way.
This piece needs a dedication to being on the beat. But also it needs to be relaxed.
m. 5 This should not be an abrupt entrance – just join the stream of music already going.
And make it creamy 🙂
m. 11 “a bawt”
m. 13-14 Carry “dream” over to the first beat of m. 14, and put a pitched M there. I always write it with a schwah – “mə” – like “muh”, quick and explosive.
m. 14-15 Same thing with “read” – “də” on beat 1 of m. 15
m. 16-17 Same thing with “woəld” – no R, “ldə” on beat 1 of m. 17
m. 18 Pronounce “out” as “aw”
m. 19 Again, “woəld” – no R, “ldə” on beat 3
m. 21 No breath
m. 22 Pronounce “now” “nah”, Breath after it
m. 31 Breath after “too”
m. 45 Watch for the breath
The Moon Bridge
m. 7 Pronounce “out” “aw”
m. 39 – 41 Less vibrato
m. 48 Remember breath after “play”
m. 52 Breath after “fair” – Watch carefully there is a quick ritard, then a tempo
m. 57 – 60 Watch carefully, Jane seems to be playing with the tempo here, and hold the formatta with her.
m. 58 “Bawz”, Z on her cutoff
m. 60 Breath after “grass”
In Some Dry, Dry, Earth
m. 1 No vibrato
m. 2 “drah”
m. 6 Crescendo
pg 2, 3, 6 The phrase “a little root” occurs multiple times. Each time it is a different
length – eighth, quarter, dotted quarter, half – make sure you notice what it is each time and put the “T” where it belongs. (I don't think Libby Larsen was trying to mess with us, it just feels like it)
m. 20- 21 No vibrato, clinical
m. 34 Off on beat 3 (Watch)
m. 38 Breath after “cov-er-er”
m. 46 No Breath
m. 47 Off on beat 3, put “Z” there
m. 51 “aw”
This Day I am Eighteen
m. 7 Crescendo and sing through to m. 8 (driving)
m. 14 Make sure we are firmly on the E natural (SI singing E flat against us), And crescendo. Breath after “me'
m. 20 B flat and A flat were, well, flat
m. 22 Change dot to an eighth rest and put “və” there.
m. 23 No “R”, Change dot to an eighth rest and put the “th” there
m. 28 No “R” in “there”
m. 29 Somehow mark the fp and crescendo so you notice it (aarrrg)
m. 30-31 Carry “self” to beat 1 of m. 31
m. 31 Breath after “self”
Next week Altos get the first sectional so Arrive at 10:10.
Also, we will work on the third movement of Concord Fragments – Walden. As we have not spent much time on it, please be prepared.
Have a great week. Much better weather, yeah.
