Soprano 2 Notes
Evening Ladies,
Walden
We spent the sectional working on only this.
The piece alternates between swing (3 notes to a beat) and straight (4 notes to a beat). Jane called the beat an “elusive 2” because of this.
m. 1 Cross out “flexible” – this will be a straight quarter = 60.
m. 2 Haw Nawt – make sure the G is flat.
m. 4 Breath before “Ah”
m. 7 Breath after “Ah”
m. 9 Breath after “unison”
m. 13 The piano has a funky beat – we have a straight 6/8. The good news is the oboe and clarinet have our beat.
m. 21 Crescendo
m. 22 Decrescendo, and breath at the end (for the altos), watch Jane for it
m. 23 Sing this section as straight as you can. Also put an H in front of “All” to help soften your entrance.
m. 26 “skaw”
m. 28-29 Carry “sky” through to m. 29
m. 30 Turn early, the next measure is tricky
m. 31 Fit 4 into 1 large beat
m. 33 Again, breath at the end of measure (for soprano 1s and altos). Watch Jane for it.
m. 35 “Pawn”
m. 36 Key change
m. 40-41 carry “loon” to m. 41 with an “nə” (voiced n)
m. 46 Quick breath after “green” with a good “n”
m. 49 No breath
m. 51 Cut off tied note and take a good breath
m. 58 Turn early, the next measure is tricky
m. 61 Carry “gaze” to m. 62 put the “z” there
m. 64 Note this is a B natural, only a half step down
m. 76 – 85 Ms. Larsen is creating a time stop here, something she likes to do.
Note “Dawn” closes immediately to the “n”; it sounds like a bell. Then m. 78 open right up to “aw” and start to crescendo.
m. 79 Cut off the tied note and put a good “nə” there
m. 80 Forte. Close immediately on the “n” to a closed “n” and keep closed. Hard to stay forte, but try.
m. 82 Subito piano
m. 83 Crescendo
m. 88 Turn early so we are ready to match the unison C
m. 89 Breath at the end of measure (for soprano 1s and altos). Watch Jane for it. Put the “s” on with her.
m. 90 This is different as we sing the same notes as the firsts this time.
m. 95 Cut off tied note, put an “nə” on it.
m. 96 Carry “loon” to next beat (other parts are not breathing).
m. 97 – 98 Gliss is an “inelegant slide”. The piano will give us the B.
m. 99 Make the first A short with a quick breath.
m. 102 Cut off the tie, take a good breath.
m. 108 Breath after “sun”.
m. 110 Note the decrescendo is from forte to piano. Take a breath before the last “Ah”. Watch Jane so our F G A getting interrupted doesn't get wierd.
m. 111 Crescendo back from piano to forte at the end.
Dry Dry Earth
m. 48 Carry “buried” through to m. 49, Put a good “də” there.
m. 49 Carry “dead” through to m. 50, Put a good “də” there.
m. 51 Marcie, Michele and Linde sing bottom soprano 1 line.
Having the 3rd in the alto line and the 5th in the middle makes the chord indefinite. This gives the idea of a lack of commitment, like she's not sure of the thought.
Come Spring
pg. 26 etc. Back off the unaccented notes so the accented notes can stand out.
Have a good week!
Linde
